Healing Through Writing is a workshop method I developed based on the research of Dr. James Pennebaker on expressive writing and the training I received through the Toronto Writer's Collective in the AWA Writing Method, in conjunction with my own writing and healing experiences. Just as one might develop a meditation or yoga practice, expressive writing is a practice that can alleviate stress, depression, anxiety, and a variety of physical symptoms during and after times of emotional upheaval. It is not designed to replace traditional therapy if that is part of your healing, but rather as an extra tool in your healing toolbox.
In 2017, I partnered with Dr. Stacy Thomas to create the Growing Forward Through Writing workshop series to teach anyone to use writing as a tool for personal healing and wellness. The series was successful and encouraged us to keep growing this method when, as life often happens, just as we were getting on a roll I found out I was pregnant with my rainbow baby. After the experience of loss and the journey I had been on, I decided to take time off to care for myself, my eldest son and my new baby, focusing my energies inward rather than outward. Several years (and a pandemic) later, I’m back and ready to go! I have combined my yoga and meditation training to create a unique inner healing and exploration experience that fully embodies what I practice in my own life. This new method combining yoga and writing has been proven both scientifically and anecdotally to be supportive to emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.
